1) PM to lay foundation stone of a multi-modal terminal on River Ganga in Jharkhand
•Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of a multi-modal terminal on River Ganga at Sahebganj in Jharkhand.

•The state of the art terminal, to be constructed at an estimated cost of 280 crore rupees, is an important component of the development of the National Waterway-1 from Varanasi to Haldia. 

•National Waterway-1 is being developed under the Jal Marg Vikas Project of the Inland Waterways Authority of India, with the technical and financial assistance of World Bank at an estimated cost of around 5,400 crore rupees. The terminal will have a cargo handling capacity of 2.24 Million Tonnes Per Annum. 

2) Haryana government to provide Rs 21,000 to families for third girl child
•Haryana government has decided to provide a one-time grant of Rs 21,000 to all those families whose third girl child was born after August 24, 2015, under the 'Aapki Beti, Hamari Beti' scheme.

•Under the scheme, the eligible families will receive the amount irrespective of their caste, creed, religion, income and number of sons.

•Earlier under the scheme, the first girl child born in the families belonging to Scheduled Castes and all Below Poverty Line (BPL), and second, twin or multiple girls born on or after January 22, 2015 in any family were eligible for the grant.

3) International Day of Sport for Development and Peace: 06th April
•6 April was declared as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) by the UN General Assembly.

•In 2013, the Sixty-seventh session of the United Nations General Assembly decided to proclaim 6 April as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.

•On the occasion of the 2017 International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP), the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) launches the digital campaign #WePlayTogether to encourage organizations and individuals.

4) India’s ranks 7th in world’s largest tourism economy in terms of GDP
•India's travel and tourism sector ranks 7th in the world in terms of its total contribution to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to a new report of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), 2016.

•According to data, the travel and tourism sector generated Rs 14.1 trillion (USD208.9 billion) in 2016, which is world's 7th largest in terms of absolute size the sum is equivalent to 9.6% of India's GDP. The USA topped the list followed by China and Germany at the second and third position, respectively.

5) Aditya Birla Group gets RBI licence to start payments bank
•Aditya Birla Idea Payments Bank Ltd becomes the seventh entity to receive a final licence from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to set up a payments bank.

•Except Vodafone M-Pesa Ltd, all payment bank licence holders have received the final approval. Among payment bank licence holders, two entities namely Airtel Payments Bank and India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) have started operations so far. 

•While Airtel is offering 7.25% interest on its savings account, IPPB is offering three types of accounts where interest rates will vary from 4.5-5.5%.


6) Cabinet approvals on 5th April 2017
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the following agreements on 5th April.

9. Cabinet apprised of the MoU with Ferrovie Dello Stato Italiane S.P.A. of Italy on Technical Cooperation in the Rail Sector

1) Jhargram becomes 22nd Bengal district
•Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared Jhargram as the 22nd district of West Bengal.

•Jhargram has been formed by bifurcating West Midnapore, which has a population of more than 11.37 lakh. R. Arjun has been appointed the district magistrate while Abhisek Gupta has been made the police superintendent. Mamta Banerjee announced a budget of Rs 200 crore for the development of Jhargram.

2) BS-IV Grade Fuel launched by Central Government after BS-III ban
•Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of State (I/C) for Petroleum and Natural Gas officially launched the low emission Bharat stage (BS)-IV Grade fuel in Bhubaneswar.

•The launch was made on the special occasion of Utkal Diwas which is the foundation day of Odisha. Bharat stage (BS)-IV Grade fuel was introduced after BS-III compatible vehicles sales and registration were banned by Central government from April 1, 2017. 

•The launch was made in 12 cities of India. They were Varanasi, Vijayawada, Durgapur, Gorakhpur, Imphal, Bhopal, Ranchi, Madurai, Nagpur, Patna, Guwahati and Shillong.

3) Rs 40,000 crore expressway project in northeast announced
•The first express highway project in the northeast region will be developed along the Brahmaputra river in Assam at an estimated investment of Rs 40,000 crore inaugurated by Union Road Minister Nitin Gadkari.

•The agreement was signed among the Assam government, the National Highways Authority of India and the Inland Waterways of India.

4) SASEC's Finance Ministers Meeting held in New Delhi
•Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley chaired the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Finance Ministers meeting in New Delhi.

•It was attended by the seven Finance Ministers from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal and Sri Lanka and the Asian Development Bank as a supporting SASEC in this endeavor. 

•As a part of the SASEC initiative, the member countries have come up with SASEC Vision for the economic growth of the sub-region, which was launched by Arun Jaitley during the meeting. Myanmar has joined the SASEC program as its seventh member.

5) ICICI, Axis Bank sell Rs 1800 crore Ballarpur loans to Edelweiss
•ICICI Bank and Axis Bank sold Rs.1,800 crore of loans to paper maker Ballarpur Industries Ltd to Edelweiss Asset Reconstruction Company.

•Bankers stated that this is possibly the first instance of a potential bad loan being sold off. It’s also the first time that loans have been sold to an asset reconstruction firm. Axis Bank sold loans of Rs.1,200 crore and ICICI Bank sold loans of Rs.600 crore. 

6) India ranks 3rd for third year in a row in WADA doping charts
•India has been ranked third for the third year in a row in a doping violation report published by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for 2015 with 117 athletes from the country being punished after testing positive for banned substances.

•India followed Russian Federation (176 athletes) and Italy (129 athletes) at the third spot in the doping violation chart released by the WADA, the same position as in the reports of 2013 and 2014.

•This is the first set of Anti-Doping Rule Violation statistics under the revised WADA Code and third such report in its history since 2013.

1) Malaysia agrees to set up technology park in Andhra Pradesh
•A Malaysian company MTN has agreed to help set up a technology park in Andhra Pradesh that’s expected to attract private sector investment of $100 million in the first phase.

•The Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board and MIGHT (Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology) Technology Nurturing Sdn. Bhd (MTN) have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on building the park, which will cover 250 acres and focus on new technologies.

•The MoU was exchanged in New Delhi in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak. Phase 1 will be spread over 100 acres to produce biodegradable packaging for the food and electronics industries.

2) First bio-gas bus in Kolkata with flat Rs1 fare
•Phoenix India Research and Development Group launched the first bio-gas fuelled bus in Kolkata keeping a flat fare of just Rs 1.

•The company has tied-up with Ashok Leyland to manufacture the 54-seater bus at a cost of Rs 13 lakh approximately. The first bus will be flagged off on April 7, 2017 and will run between Ultadanga in the north and Garia in the south in Kolkata.

3) Japan officially recognises Bitcoin as currency
•A new Japanese law that defines cryptocurrency, including Bitcoin, Ripple, Litecoin and others, as a legal payment method has come into force in Japan. According to the new law, all virtual currency exchanges are to be regulated by the Japanese Financial Services Agency. They must also be registered with the financial watchdog and must verify identities of customers opening accounts.

4) SBI cuts lending rates by 0.15%
•Ahead of the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy this week, the country's largest bank, State Bank of India has reduced its benchmark lending rate by 0.15%.

•Base rate or the minimum lending rate of the bank has been reduced from 9.25% to 9.1%. The cut in SBI's base rate was effective from 1st April,2017. With this reduction, the equated monthly installments, or EMIs for the bank's new as well as existing borrowers who have taken housing or car loans at the base rate will come down by at least 0.15%.

5) Scientists identify fungus that eats plastic•Scientists from Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have identified a soil fungus Aspergillus tubingensis that uses enzymes to rapidly break down plastic materials. The plastic-eating fungus was found Islamabad, Pakistan. The new discovery in an advance can help to deal with plastic waste problem that threatens our environment in safer and more effective way Key facts Scientists have found that Aspergillus tubingensis fungus which ordinarily lives in the soil can also grows on the surface of plastics. 6) Government launches Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana in Nellore
•The Union Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment has launched Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana in Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh. The Scheme aims at providing physical aids and assisted-living devices for senior citizens belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) category. 

Key Provisions of the Scheme 

•The scheme will be distribute free of cost physical aids and assisted-living devices for senior citizens belonging to BPL category in Camp mode.

•It is the first-of-its-kind Central Sector Scheme (CCS) in India, to be fully funded by the Union Government. It is expected to benefit 5,20,000 Senior Citizens and its expenditure implementation will be met from the “Senior Citizens’ Welfare Fund“. 

•Implementing Agency: Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation (ALIMCO), a PSU under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. It will also undertake one year free maintenance of the devices. 

•Aids and Assisted-Living Devices to be provided under it: The eligible elderly beneficiary will get walking sticks, elbow crutches, walkers/crutches, tripods/qadpods, hearing aids, wheelchair, aificial Dentures and Spectacles depending upon their physical impairment. 

•Purpose: The assisted-living devices will help the Senior Citizens to overcome their age related physical impairment and to lead a dignified and productive life with minimal dependence on care givers or other members of the family. 

•Identification of beneficiaries: It will be done by the State Governments/UTs through a Committee chaired by the Deputy Commissioner/District Collector. 30% of the beneficiaries in each district shall be women. 

•The Committee can utilize the data of BPL beneficiaries receiving Old Age Pension under the NSAP or any other Scheme of the State/UTs for identification of senior citizens belonging to BPL category.

1) Madhya Pradesh CM launches 'MP e-nagarpalika' app
•The Madhya Pradesh government has launched an app named ‘MP e-nagarpalika’ to provide various municipal services online.

•The mobile app was launched by state Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. This app would offer 378 services like online payment of property tax, seeking building permission, birth/ marriage/death certificates etc. It will also register complaints related to garbage, water, streetlights etc.

•Online payment gateway would be available on this app. This mobile app would encourage the cashless transaction. This mobile app is a part of Rs 225-crore ‘e-nagarpalika’ project, under which all municipal services would be made available online on a unified web platform.

2) Union Textiles Minister launches PowerTex India Scheme
•The Government has launched PowerTex India, a comprehensive scheme for power loom sector development, simultaneously at over 45 locations in the country.

•The Union Textiles Minister, Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani Launched the scheme in Bhiwandi, Thane district, Maharashtra. The scheme will especially benefit small powerloom weavers.

•The Minister and CMs interacted with various states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and others through video conference, as PowerTex India scheme was launched nationwide.

The comprehensive scheme has the following components:

•In-situ Upgradation of Plain Powerlooms

•Group Workshed Scheme (GWS)

•Yarn Bank Scheme

•Common Facility Centre (CFC)

•Pradhan Mantri Credit Scheme for Powerloom Weavers

3) 19th commonwealth forestry conference to begin in Uttarakhand today
•19th Commonwealth Forestry Conference (CFC) 2017 will begin today at Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

•Uttarakhand Governor Dr. K.K. Paul will inaugurate the 19th Commonwealth Forestry Conference at the FRI in Dehradun. The 5-day conference is being organized on the theme ‘Forests for Prosperity and Posterity’. The participants from 49 Commonwealth member countries will participate in the conference.

•The conference is being organized in coordination with the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change along with Commonwealth Forestry Association of United Kingdom. The issues affecting climate change and green cover will be deliberated upon in the conference.

4) Rajiv Kumar Chander appointed as India's Ambassador and permanent representative to the UN
•Rajiv Kumar Chander has been appointed as the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations Offices in Geneva.

•Mr. Chander belongs to the Indian Foreign Services batch of 1983. He is currently the consul general of India in Vancouver since August 2015. He was the deputy permanent representative with the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, Geneva, between 2006 and 2009. He is expected to take up his assignment shortly.

5) Roger Federer wins Miami Open 2017
•Roger Federer (Switzerland) defeated Rafael Nadal (Spain) to win Miami Open 2017 Singles title.

•Miami Open 2017 was held in Florida, USA. A fourth straight win over Nadal was his longest winning streak in their 13-year professional rivalry which makes Federer the oldest winner of the Miami Open.

•The victory was Federer’s 26th ATP Masters 1000 title, only Novak Djokovic with 30 and Rafael Nadal with 28 have won more titles than Federer.

•The other winners in Miami Open 2017 are as follows- 
1. Women's Singles- Johanna Konta (United Kingdom)
2. Men's Doubles- Łukasz Kubot (Poland)/ Marcelo Melo (Brazil)
3. Women's Doubles- Gabriela Dabrowski (Canada) / Xu Yifan (China)

6) Sindhu lifts India Open badminton title 2017
•Olympic silver-medallist P.V. Sindhu has defeated Carolina Marin in straight sets 21-19, 21-16 in 47 minutes at the India Open badminton championship 2017 in New Delhi. With this victory, she avenged her Olympic final defeat over the same opponent.

•Sindhu toyed with her opponent and won the finale easily. The Spaniard could not withstand the firepower of P.V. Sindhu. This was the second Superseries title win for Sindhu. The Indian shuttler has shown character in the tournament and she entered the final after beaten Saina Nehwal and Sung ji-Hyun.
