1. ISRO successfully ground-tests Cryogenic Upper Stage engine meant for rocket GSLV-Mark-III


Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully ground tested the Cryogenic Upper Stage engine meant for the rocket GSLV-Mark-III.

The engine, designated as C25, was tested for a duration of 50 seconds in its Propulsion Complex at Mahendragiri in southern Tamil Nadu, demonstrating all the stage operations.

This is the first in a series of two tests. The next one is planned for a flight duration of 640 seconds shortly.

The national space agency has termed the 50 second test as a significant milestone

The GSLV-Mark-III rocket fitted with the cryogenic upper stage is expected to lift off in the first quarter of this year, carrying a 4-tonne class communication satellite.

2. AP launches Rs 100 cr fund of funds to prop fintech startups


Andhra Pradesh today announced a Rs 100 crore fund of funds to invest in fintech startups.

A fund of funds which will be managed professionally by a venture capital firm. It will help hone fintech startups

It is Initiated an industry-academia-government partnership to tap and hone skilled talent available at cheaper costs to develop the biggest city of the state into a global fintech hub.

100 start-ups and up to 15 global companies with their centres of excellence housed in the 'Vizag Fintech Valley.

3. India’s inter-service military exercise ‘Tropex’ kicks off


The Indian Navy’s Annual Theatre Readiness Operational Exercise (TROPEX) got underway on 24 Jan 17

The exercise will have ships and aircraft of both the Western and Eastern Naval Commands, as also assets from the Indian Air Force, Indian Army and the Indian Coast Guard exercising together.

Participation of major surface combatants and air assets of the Indian Navy including INS Vikramaditya, INS Chakra, Landing Platform Dock (LPD) Jalashwa

anti-submarine warfare aircraft operating alongside SU-30 MKI, Jaguars, AWACS, IL-78 Flight Refuelling Aircraft of the Indian Air Force and infantry units of the Indian Army

The exercise will be conducted in various phases, both in harbour and at sea encompassing the various facets of war-fighting and combat operations.

4. Founder of Indian supercomputing Dr Bhatkar appointed new VC Nalanda University


Vijay Pandurang Bhatkar, a technocrat who is considered the father of the Indian Supercomputer, has been appointed the new Vice-Chancellor of Nalanda University, Rajgir, in Bihar.

He will hold the office for a three-year period from the date of his appointment as per the Nalanda University Act, Sec 11(3).

Established in November 2010 as a Central University, Nalanda University is spread over a 443-acres campus and started offering academic programmes in 2014

7.  Australian Open: Serena beats sister Venus for record 23rd slam title


Serena Williams beat her sister Venus Williams in the final today to win her 23rd Grand Slam singles title.

This is also her a seventh Australian Open win and her 23rd Grand Slam victory since the game turned professional in 1968.

Serena now stands just one Slam away from matching Margaret Court’s record of 24 Slams while eclipsing the record of Steffi Graf with 22.
