1) World No Tobacco Day: 31 May
•World No Tobacco Day is observed around the world every year on May 31. The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2017 is "Tobacco – a threat to development." This theme has been set by the World Health Organization, WHO.

•The campaign aims to demonstrate the threats that the tobacco industry poses to sustainable development, including the health and economic well-being of citizens in all countries. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe. 

2) India’s Health Minister JP Nadda gets WHO’s special recognition for tobacco control
•World No-Tobacco-Day is observed on 31st May globally. On this day people are encouraged to observe abstinence of 24 hours from all forms of tobacco consumption.

•This year Union Health Minister of India Jagat Prakash Nadda is chosen for WHO Director-General Special Recognition Awards for accelerating India’s tobacco control initiatives and taking bold measures to protect people against hazards of tobacco use. According to a WHO report, action to stamp out tobacco use can help countries prevent millions of people from falling ill and dying from tobacco-related diseases, combat poverty and reduce large-scale environmental degradation.

3) India ranks 120th among 131 nations in women workforce: World Bank report
•According to India Development Report released by World Bank,  India had one of the lowest female participation in the workforce, ranking 120th among 131 countries.

•While overall job creation has been limited, most of the new ones have been grabbed by men given the social norms. As per the report, the participation level has been dropping since 2005, despite having 42% women who are graduates. 

•Jobs for Indian women remain primarily in the agriculture sector. The share of women in services and industry is less than 20%. Indian women’s workforce participation is closer to Pakistan (24.6 percent) and the Arab world (23.3 percent) while neighboring Countries Nepal (79.9 percent) and China (63.9 percent) are leagues ahead.

4) India and Fiji Sign MoU on Defence Cooperation
•The Minister of Defence and National Security of Fiji, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola accompanied by his delegation signed an MoU with the Minister of Defence, Finance and Corporate Affairs, Shri Arun Jaitley in New Delhi.

•An MoU on defence cooperation envisaging several areas of cooperation including in defence industry, military training and humanitarian assistance & disaster management was signed. 

5) Lionel Messi wins fourth Golden Shoe
•Barcelona striker Lionel Messi won the European Golden Shoe for a record equaling fourth time having scored 37 goals in the Spanish league.

•He drew level with Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo with the fourth honour. Messi previously won the award, which counts goals in the biggest leagues as more points, in 2010, 2012 and 2013.

6) Kohli only Indian in top 10 of ICC ODI rankings
•India captain Virat Kohli is the lone cricketer from the country to feature in the top 10 of the ICC Players Rankings for ODIs as he managed to hold on to his third spot in the batsman's chart.

•The top three batsmen  South Africa's AB de Villiers (874 rating points), Australian David Warner (871) and Kohli (852) are separated by just 22 points. Among other Indians to feature in the top 20 of the ICC Players Ranking for ODI batsmen are Rohit Sharma (12th), Mahendra Singh Dhoni (13th) and Shikhar Dhawan, who dropped a place to 15th.
