1)  World Cancer Day: 04th February
•World Cancer Day is being observed today. The day is observed on 4th February every year to raise awareness about cancer, its treatment and to encourage methods of its prevention. The primary goal of the day is to reduce the illness and related deaths by 2020.

•Vice President Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated a medical camp at Swarna Bharat Trust, Atkur in Andhra Pradesh organised on the occasion of World Cancer Day. 

2)  PM Modi Inaugurates Investors' Summit In Assam
•One hundred and sixty MoUs with investment proposals of over 64,000 crore rupees were signed on the opening day of the first ever global investors summit at Guwahati in Assam. 

•The summit hosted by the Assam government is a new beginning and will open a new chapter in boosting the relationship with ASEAN countries. The MoUs were signed by hundreds of industry leaders for investment in the state.

3)  Mega healthcare scheme game changer, financing not a constraint: Niti Aayog
•Niti Aayog Vice-Chairman Rajiv Kumar has said, the newly announced mega healthcare scheme is a game changer and revenue from the 1 per cent additional cess would be enough to meet the funding needs. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his budget for 2018-19 announced the National Health Protection Scheme (NHPS) announced to provide health insurance cover 5 lakh rupees to over 10 crore poor and vulnerable families.

•Talking to PTI, Mr Kumar regretted that a completely baseless and false propaganda is being spread by the opposition leaders against the ambitious scheme of the Modi government. On funding of the scheme envisaging to cover about 50 crore people, the Niti Aayog vice-chairman said the allocation for the health sector has been raised by 6,000 crore rupees.
Moreover, there is an existing facility of 2,000 crore rupees for the ongoing Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) scheme. 

4)  To preserve the ecosystem, the Uttar Pradesh government has inaugurated the state's 1st ever Butterfly Park in Kanpur

• A total of 100 species of flowers have been planted in order to attract the butterflies.

• By now, more than 50 species of butterflies have already been observed in the park.

5)  The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is going to send the Chandrayaan-2 on the world's first-ever mission to soft-land near the Moon's south pole

•The mission could take place either in the first quarter or second half of 2018. 

•The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark II will carry the Chandrayaan-2.

1) Sushma Swaraj Embarked on Tour of 3 Southeast Asian Nations
•External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj left on a 5-day visit to three South East Asian countries – Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore. On the first leg of the visit, Ms Swaraj will reach Thailand and will hold an official meeting with Thai Foreign Affairs Minister Don Pramudwinai.

•During the visit to Indonesia, Ms Swaraj will co-chair the 5th meeting of India-Indonesia Joint Commission. In Singapore, the External Affairs Minister will inaugurate the Regional Pravasi Bharatiya Divas of ASEAN countries. She will have bilateral meetings with the leaders in Singapore.

2) Health Ministry and Tata Memorial Centre Launches India's First Digital Online Oncology Tutorial
•Smt Preeti Sudan, Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) launched the country’s first digital Online Oncology Tutorial Series designed by the Tata Memorial Center in collaboration with the Health Ministry.

•The oncology tutorial series aims to train the doctors across the country to educate them in early detection, prevention, palliation, rehabilitation and treatment of various cancers.

3) MoU between India and Israel on Cooperation in Oil and Gas Sector Approved
•Cabinet has approved the signing of MoU between India and Israel on cooperation in the Oil and Gas Sector.

•The cooperation envisaged under the agreement will facilitate promotion of investments in each other’s countries, technology transfer, R&D, conducting joint studies, capacity building of human resources and collaboration in the area of Start-ups.

4) NABARD Sanctioned Rs 372.51 crore to Odisha
•The NABARD has sanctioned Rs 372.51 crore loan assistance under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) to Odisha towards irrigation and rural bridge projects for the last quarter of this fiscal.

•NABARD has also sanctioned 14 Rural Bridge Projects under Biju Setu Yojana with RIDF loan assistance of Rs 242.34 crore.

5) Rajinder Khanna Appointed Deputy National Security Adviser
•Rajinder Khanna was appointed the deputy National Security Adviser (NSA). He was the former chief of the country’s external intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).

•He headed the RAW for a fixed two-year period. Mr Khanna is at present officer on special duty (Neighbourhood Studies) in the National Security Council Secretariat.

6) India-Myanmar Land Border Crossing Agreement Approved
•Cabinet has approved the Agreement between India and Myanmar on Land Border Crossing. The Agreement will facilitate regulation and harmonization of already existing free movement rights for people of both countries.

•It will also facilitate movement of people on the basis of valid passports and visas which will enhance economic and social interaction between the two countries. The Agreement is an enabling arrangement for movement of people across India-Myanmar border.

1) PM Modi Inaugurated World Food India 2017
•Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the most anticipated International Mega Food event- World Food India 2017, the biggest congregation of global investors and business leaders of major food companies.

•The event is organised by the Food Processing Industries Ministry in Delhi. The three-day event aims to transform food economy and realise the vision of doubling of farmers' income by establishing India as a preferred investment destination and sourcing hub for the global food processing industry.

2) Allahabad to Get India’s First Black Buck Conservation Reserve
•Uttar Pradesh cabinet decided to make India's first conservation reserve for blackbuck in Allahabad's Meja. The decision taken for the protection of black deer will also help in wooing tourists.

•In addition to this, the other decisions taken by the UP cabinet includes developing eco-tourism in nearly two dozen places in the state. Apart from this, the decision to open 13 commercial courts in the state was also taken.

3) World’s Third Largest Book Fair Opens in Sharjah
•With more than 1.5 million book titles and 1,650 publishing houses from 60 countries, Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) opened its doors to public and trade visitors. It is the third largest book fair in the world. 

•The book fair was held under the theme ‘A World in My Book’. The event has been organised by Sharjah Book Authority (SBA). Sharjah also inaugurated Sharjah Publishing City (SPC) which is the world’s first specialised book publishing free zone.

4) Walmart India Launched India's First Fulfillment Centre in Mumbai
•Walmart India launched its first fulfillment centre in Mumbai. The fulfillment centre is a new format of its cash-and-carry store model that will focus exclusively on FMCG products and staples and will not stock fresh food or electronics.

•The company has also planned another fulfillment centre in Lucknow.

5) Chanda Kochhar, Priyanka Chopra Among World’s Most Powerful Women: Forbes
•Five Indian women led by ICICI Bank chief executive officer (CEO) and managing director (MD) Chanda Kochhar and including Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra, have featured on the list of the world’s 100 most powerful women compiled by Forbes. The list was topped by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

•Kochhar was ranked 32, while HCL Corp. CEO Roshni Nadar Malhotra took the 57th position. Priyanka Chopra was at 97. 

•The Top 5 Women in the List are-

1. Chancellor of Germany- Angela Merkel,
2. UK Prime Minister- Theresa May,
3. Co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation- Melinda Gates, 
4. Facebook chief operating officer (COO)- Sheryl Sandberg

6) Gagan Narang Wins Silver in Commonwealth Shooting Championships
•Olympic bronze-medallist Gagan Narang won a silver medal in the men’s 50m rifle prone event at theCommonwealth Shooting Championships in Gold Coast, Australia. Annu Raj Singh has also won the bronze medal in the women’s 50m pistol competition.

•London Olympics bronze medallist Narang, who is appearing in his first major tournament since the 2016 Rio Olympics, shot a total of 617.6 in the qualification to end fourth.

1) Madhya Pradesh Tops in Digital Initiatives: Survey
•Madhya Pradesh has emerged as the top state in terms of digital initiatives undertaken, with a maximum score of 100.1 on performance index, followed by Maharashtra at 99.9 and Andhra Pradesh at 99.8, according to a report by Coeus Age Consulting.

•Chhattisgarh (97.4) and Karnataka (95.3) occupied the fourth and fifth positions in the list, respectively. The report is based on a comparative assessment of digital initiatives by 36 states and Union Territories.

2) Tamil Nadu Government Laid Foundation Stone for Rs. 198 cr Aerospace Park
•The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Edapaddi K Palaniswami, laid the foundation stone for an aerospace park at Kanchipuram district to be set up by the State Government in 245 acres and at an estimated cost of Rs 198 crore.

•When fully ready, the park will attract a total investment of nearly Rs 1,000 crore and create job opportunities for nearly 30,000, according to the State government.

3) 30th Edition of CORPAT Begins Between Indian-Indonesian Navy
•Indian Navy Ship Sukanya under the command of Commander SA Deodhar has arrived at Belawan Indonesia to participate in the 30th edition of CORPAT (Coordinated Patrol) and 3rd Bilateral exercise between the Indian Navy and the Indonesian Navy.

•The exercise is aimed to foster closer maritime ties with countries located on the rim of the Indian Ocean. The two navies have been carrying out CORPAT on respective sides of the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) twice a year since 2002.

4) Deadline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar to govt schemes extended till March 31, 2108
•The Centre today told the Supreme Court that the deadline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar to avail benefits of various government schemes would be extended till 31st of March next year. Attorney General K K Venugopal told the apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra that the deadline for Aadhaar linking to avail benefits of the schemes was to end in December and it has now been decided to extend it till 31st March, 2018.

•The counsel appearing for petitioners, who have challenged the government's move to make Aadhaar mandatory for these schemes, raised the issue of the mandatory linking of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) number with bank accounts and mobile numbers.

5) RBI to Make LEI Must for Companies with Over Rs 5 Crore Exposure
•After making Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) mandatory for transactions in interest rate, forex and credit derivative market, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is set to make LEI compulsory for companies having aggregate fund-based and non-fund based exposure over Rs 5 crore.

•Banks will be required to capture this number in the Central Repository of Information on Large Credits (CRILC) database that captures details of loan above Rs 5 crore. The LEI number will help banks in monitoring the aggregate exposure of corporate borrowers. Firms can obtain their LEI code from Legal Entity Identifier India Ltd. (LEIL).

6) Jitu Rai and Heena Sidhu Strike Gold in ISSF World Cup
•Jitu Rai and Heena Sidhu combined to give India their first gold medal of the International Shooting Sports Federation‬ (ISSF) World Cup Final in New Delhi. 

•They clinched the top honors in the 10m air pistol mixed team event on the opening day of competitions. Rai and Sidhu picked up their third gold together in the mixed team event, being held officially for the first time at an ISSF World Cup.

1) Maharashtra Government Launches 'Namo Yuva Rojgar Kendra'
•Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched Namo Yuva Rojgar Kendra an initiative providing job opportunities to unemployed youth in Mumbai. There are various schemes like farmers weekly market, farmers mobile market and mother’s Tiffin, under this Yuva Rojgar Kendra.

•These products will be made available with the help of mobile vans all over Mumbai and the information about the location of the vans is made available through an app. This app was also launched by the Chief Minister.

2) Odisha Government and Facebook L aunches 'SheMeansBusiness' Program
•Chief minister Naveen Patnaik launched 'She Means Business' program of Facebook for women entrepreneurs in Odisha. Under the scheme 25, 000 women entrepreneurs and self-help group (SHG) members will be given training on digital marketing skills within next one year.

•Facebook will also make a database of entrepreneurs in the state and will monitor their growth, turnover and profit after one year.

3) Environment Minister Launches ‘Gaj Yatra’ to Mark World Elephant Day 2017
•Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, launched ‘Gaj Yatra’ in Karnataka, a nationwide campaign to protect elephants on the occasion of World Elephant Day (12 August). The campaign is planned to cover 12 elephant range states.

•The Environment Minister released the All India Census 2017 Report on elephants. The ‘Gaju’ mascot, which was released by the Ministry in 2012, will be helm the campaign. The campaign will be led by the Wildlife Trust of India. Actor and wildlife enthusiast, Ms. Dia Mirza, participated in the walk and run event organised on the occasion. 

4) India's First Online Course on Infusion Therapy Launched
•Infusion Nurses Society (INS), a global authority in infusion therapy launched India's first online course on Infusion Therapy for nurses. Under this, it aims to train over 3,000 nurses in the vital medical procedure.

•As per the INS, due to the reach and ease of the digital platform, the course will enable members to access the various infusion therapy modules and presentations through its website. 

5) Make in India Seminar Held in New Delhi
•As a step in this direction, second Seminar on ‘MAKE’ projects for Indian Army was held on 12 Aug 17 at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi jointly under aegis of Indian Army and Confederation of Indian Industry (Cll). 

•During the course of the seminar, a round table interaction of various Directorates of Integrated Headquarters of MoD (Army) with industry reps was also held at the same venue. The seminar was attended by Senior Officers of the Army as well as from Ministry of Defence.

6) ‘Fete de Puducherry’ Begins
•A three-day annual cultural festival named ‘Fete de Puducherry’ organised by the government of India begins in Puducherry. The festival is held in association with the South Zone Cultural Centre (Tamil Nadu) every year to bring to focus the multi-faceted cultural features of various states.

•The Puducherry government has been holding the festival since 1985 as part of celebrating Independence Day and also Liberation Day of Puducherry (August 16).

1) Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis launches portal for job seekers, employers
•Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched a web portal 'Mahaswayam' that will cater to job seekers, employers, entrepreneurs, and training institutes who can avail details regarding skill development and employment.

•Earlier, the state government ran three different portals- Maharashtra State Skill Development Society (MSSDS) portal for Skill Development, 'Maharojgar' for employment and 'Mahaswayamrojgar' for entrepreneurship. These three have now been merged into 'Mahaswayam', making it easier for all beneficiaries as well as the state to keep a track of the demand and supply of workforce.

2) Prithvi-II missile successfully test-fired
•India successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable Prithvi-II missile from a test range in Odisha as part of a user trial by the Army. The trial of the surface-to-surface missile, which has a strike range of 350 km, was carried out using a mobile launcher of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha.

•As per the official report, the trial of the sophisticated missile was successful and the mission objectives were met.

About PRITHVI-II Missile in Brief-

1.The Prithvi-II missile is capable of carrying 500 kg to 1,000 kg of warheads and is thrusted by liquid propulsion twin engines.

2.It uses advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvring trajectory to hit its target with precision and accuracy.

3.It is surface-to-surface missile, which has a strike range of 350 km,

4.The technological program was monitored by the scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as part of a training exercise.

3) India ranked 137th in the Global Peace Index 2017
•India has ranked 137th out of 163 countries on Global Peace Index 2017 published by The Institute of Economics and Peace. This is the eleventh edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI).

•Iceland has been named the world's most peaceful country, topping the Global Peace Index for the tenth consecutive year followed by New Zealand and Portugal at second and third position while Syria has been named the least peaceful country.

4) Japan launches satellite for high-precision positioning system
•Japan launched a satellite to help build a high-precision geolocation system that will complement the US-operated GPS. A 'H-IIA' rocket blasted off from the Tanegashima space center in southern Japan carrying the 'Michibiki' No.2 satellite.  

•The Michibiki system is capable of covering the Asia-Oceania region and works with the US-operated Global Positioning System (GPS). Michibiki, meaning guidance in Japanese, is intended for civilian use, with a claimed positioning accuracy down to mere centimeters (inches). Though GPS is widely used in Japan, having supplementary satellites is important in a country where mountainous terrain and high buildings may interfere with GPS signals.

5) UN General Assembly elects Slovakia's Miroslav Lajcak as next president
•The UN General Assembly elected Slovak foreign minister Miroslav Lajcak to be the next president of the 193-member powerful body.  

•Lajcak was elected by acclamation as President of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly at a special session. The 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly will commence from September 12, 2017. 

6) RBI appoints Ganesh Kumar as ED
•Reserve Bank of India has appointed S. Ganesh Kumar as Executive Director. His appointment is consequent upon voluntary retirement of Chandan Sinha.

•The central bank currently has 11 Executive Directors. As Executive Director, Ganesh Kumar will look after Department of Information Technology, Department of Payment and Settlement Systems and Department of External Investments and Operations. Prior to being promoted as ED, Ganesh Kumar was Chief General Manager-in-Charge, Department of Information Technology in the Reserve Bank.

1) Madhya Pradesh government, DMRC inked pact to supply power from Rewa project
•Madhya Pradesh government has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to supply 24 per cent of electricity generated from the Rewa ultra mega solar project to be set up in the state.

•The rest of the power will be supplied to the state. Rewa Ultra Mega Solar (RUMS) project is a joint venture of Solar Energy Corporation of India and MP Urja Vikas Nigam, wherein both parties have 50 per cent stake.

2) First Made in India industrial robot- BRABO
•TAL Manufacturing Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors has launched India’s first industrial-articulated robot and it goes by the name “BRABO”.

•The robot is indigenously developed for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in India. This is the first time that an industrial robot has been conceptualized, designed and manufactured in India. BRABO is meant to complement the human workforce and perform repetitive, high volume, dangerous and time-consuming tasks from raw material handling to packaging of finished products.

3) 'One Part Woman' wins Sahitya Akademi Award for translation of Mathorubhagan
•The English translation of writer Perumal Murugan’s novel Mathorubhagan (One Part Woman) has won the Sahitya Akademi’s award for translation in English 2016.

•The translation was done by Aniruddhan Vasudevan and the book was published by Penguin. The prize in the form of a casket containing an engraved copper plaque and a cash component of Rs 50,000 would be presented at a ceremony in June, 2017.

4) Vinay Shah, appointed as new MD & CEO of LIC Housing Finance
•Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has appointed Vinay Shah as the new Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Director of its mortgage loan arm and listed entity LIC Housing Finance.

•He comes in place of Sunita Sharma after Government had elevated her to Managing Director of LIC. Prior to joining LIC Housing Finance, Sah was Executive Director–Marketing/Product Development with LIC of India.

5) RBI caps bank exposure to REITs, InvITs at 10%
•The RBI permitted banks to invest up to 10% of the unit capital of a Real Estate Investment Trust (REITs) or Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs).

•The banks’ exposure to REITs/InvITs will be within the overall ceiling of 20% of the net worth permitted for direct investments in shares, convertible bonds/ debentures, units of equity-oriented mutual funds and Venture Capital Funds (VCFs). The move was aimed to help revive the cash-starved infrastructure sector.

6) World economy to grow at 3.5 per cent in 2017: IMF
•The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projected a marginally higher than expected growth for the world economy at 3.5 per cent in 2017.

•IMF projected the world economy to grow at a pace of 3.5 percent in 2017, up from 3.1 percent in 2016, and 3.6 per cent in 2018. The IMF's new projection for 2017 is marginally higher than what they expected in its last update. This improvement comes primarily from good economic news for Europe and Asia, and within Asia, notably for China and Japan.

1) UP Govt Renames Gorakhpur and Agra Airports
•In the third meeting of the Uttar Pradesh cabinet, the UP government changed the name of Gorakhpur and Agra Airports as well as the name of the department of welfare of the differently abled.

•The Gorakhpur Airforce Station has been renamed as Mahayogi Goraknath Airport after the founder of the Nath monastic movement. Likewise, the Agra Airport will be renamed after Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay airport. The Department of Disabled Welfare will now be known as 'Divyang Jan Vikas Empowerment'.

2) Rajasthan State govt, HPCL sign agreement for Rs 43,129 cr Barmer refinery
•In Rajasthan, the state government and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) signed an agreement for the Rs 43,129 crore Barmer refinery in the presence of Union Minister of state for petroleum and natural gas Dharmendra Pradhan and Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje in a ceremony held in Jaipur.

•The Barmer refinery will be the first in the country to produce BS-6 standard fuel. The state government will have 26% stake in the project while rest will be held by HPCL. The government has made 4800-acre land available at Pachpadra for the project.

3) Navy’s missile destroyer dedicated to Chennai
•Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami dedicated the Indian Navy’s indigenously designed ‘P15A Guided Missile Destroyer’, INS Chennai to the city Chennai.

•INS Chennai is commanded by captain C. R. Praveen Nair and has 45 officers. The ship was commissioned by ex-Defence Minister Manohar Parikkar in 2016. It is one of the most potent warships to have been constructed in India.

4) India jumps to 8th place on Global FDI Confidence Index
•India has jumped one spot to 8th rank in the 2017 A.T. Kearney Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Confidence Index.

•The Index is an annual analysis of how political, economic, and regulatory changes will likely affect FDI inflows into countries in the coming years. USA has topped A.T. Kearney Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Confidence Index for the fifth year in a row.

•The top 5 countries in A.T. Kearney Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Confidence Index 2017 are:
1. USA
2. Germany
3. China
4. UK
5. Canada

5) SEBI launched revamped website with user-friendly features
•Expanding its digital presence, markets regulator SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) launched its revamped website having several user-friendly features and compatible with all desktop and mobile devices.

•The website now also allows visitors to share web pages on their social media network. The new website is compliant with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines for making web content more accessible to differently abled people and also conforms to the guidelines for Indian government websites.

6) RBI signed MoU with the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan
•The Reserve Bank of India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on “Supervisory Cooperation and Exchange of Supervisory Information” with the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan.

•The MoU was signed by Mr. Phajo Dorjee, Deputy Governor on behalf of Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan and Mr. S S Mundra, Deputy Governor on behalf of Reserve Bank of India. With this RBI has signed 39 such MoUs, one Letter for Supervisory Co-operation and one Statement of Co-operation.
