1) High-Level Committee Approves Central Assistance Of Rs1,161 Crores To 4 States And A UT
•The Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh chaired a meeting of the High Level Committee (HLC) in New Delhi for Central Assistance to the States/ UT of Assam (affected by floods during 2017-18), Himachal Pradesh(affected by floods/ landslides during 2017-18), Sikkim (affected by floods/ landslides during 2017-18), Lakshadweep (affected by cyclone Ockhi during 2017) and Rajasthan (affected by Kharif drought during 2017).

•The HLC approved assistance of Rs 480.87 crore in respect of state of Assam. The HLC also approved assistance from NDRF amounting to Rs 84.60 crore for the state of Himachal Pradesh, Rs 67.40 crore for the state of Sikkim, Rs 2.16 crore for the UT of Lakshadweep and Rs 526.14 crore for the state of Rajasthan.The total assistance approved was Rs 1,161.17 crores.

2) UNDP To Set Up Skill Development Centre In Hyderabad
•Aimed at empowering vulnerable and marginalised women by imparting skills training, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has announced to set up a skill development centre at 'Bharosa,' an integrated support centre for distressed women and children in Hyderabad.

•'Bharosa,' an initiative of Hyderabad City Police, is a state-of-the-art centre to support women and children who are victims of violence.

3) Dharmendra Pradhan, UAE Minister Flag Off 1st Consignment Of ADNOC Crude For India
•Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and UAE Minister of State & Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) Group CEO Dr. Sultan Al Jaber flagged off the first consignment of 2 million barrels of ADNOC crude for Mangalore Cavern.

•During the day, Mr Pradhan also held the bilateral meeting with H.E. Dr. Jaber. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister also had an interactive session with over 250 Indian professionals, business leaders and community representatives working in the UAE. The event was organised by the Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi.

4) India, Largest Remittance-Receiving Country In World
•India has become the largest remittance-receiving country in the world, with migrant workers from the country sending home 69 billion US dollars in 2017. According to the report ‘RemitSCOPE – Remittance markets and opportunities – Asia and the Pacific’, remittances to the Asia-Pacific region amounted to 256 billion dollars in 2017.

•India with 69 billion Dollars, China with 64 billion Dollars and the Philippines with 33 billion Dollars are the three largest remittance-receiving countries in the world in 2017. Worldwide, an estimated 40% of the total value of remittances goes to rural areas. According to the report, cash-to-cash transactions remain by far the most common form of transfer. 

5) Lata Mangeshkar Conferred With Swara Mauli Award
•Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar was honoured with the Swara Mauli title by spiritual guru Vidya Narsimha Bharati Swami. Mangeshkar, 88, was conferred with the award at her residence in Mumbai.

•Her sisters Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar and brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar were also present.

6) ICBC Launches China's 1st India-Dedicated Investment Fund
•A state-run Chinese bank, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) has launched the country's first India-dedicated publicly offered investment fund, saying the Indian market offers the best opportunity for Chinese investors due to the prospects of double-digit growth.

•The fund, named the ICBC Credit Suisse India Market Fund, will invest in exchange-traded funds listed on more than 20 exchanges in Europe and the US that are based on the Indian market. It is China's first publicly offered fund for investing in India. The fund will invest in the future of the Indian economy and track the distribution of the industrial structure across the Indian market.

1) India, Nepal Agree To Expand Their Partnership For Socio-Economic Development
•India and Nepal have agreed to expand their partnership for socio-economic development on the basis of principles of equality, trust, respect and mutual benefit. 

•In a joint statement issued after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to Nepal. Mr. Modi and his Nepalese counterpart KP Sharma Oli emphasized the need for the regular convening of bilateral mechanisms to review the overall state of bilateral relations and for expeditious implementation of the economic and development co-operation projects.

2) Fitch Predicts 7.3% Growth Rate Of India In 2018-19
•Credit rating agency Fitch has stated that India's economic growth will accelerate to 7.3% in the current financial year (2018-19) and 7.5% in the next fiscal (2019-20).

•In its second-quarter Sovereign Credit Overview for Asia Pacific region, Fitch stated the growth rate will accelerate as money supply has recovered to its pre-demonetisation level and disruptions related to the rollout of GST have diminished.

However, in the Asia-Pacific region, remittances go disproportionally to countries with a majority of rural populations such as Nepal 81 per cent, India 67 per cent, Vietnam 66 per cent, Bangladesh 65 per cent, Pakistan 61 per cent and the Philippines 56 per cent. 

4) China's first home-built aircraft carrier begins sea trials

•China's first domestically developed aircraft carrier began sea trials today. The 50,000-metric tonne vessel will become the country's second aircraft carrier, and the first to be entirely built and designed inside of China. It would join navy before 2020. 

•The Chinese Navy said in a statement that the trial aims to demonstrate the reliability and capability of the ship's propulsion systems. 

•The still-unnamed carrier was launched this time last year but since then has been undergoing fitting of weapons and other systems and has not yet entered service. 

•China launched the new aircraft after it commissioned the first carrier the Liaoning, a refitted Soviet Union-made vessel in 2012.

1) International Nurses Day: 12 May
•International Nurses Day (IND) is celebrated every year all around the world on 12th of May to commemorate the birth anniversary of the Florence Nightingale and to mark the nurse's contributions towards people’s health.

•The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has chosen the theme “Nurses A Voice to Lead – Health is a Human right” for IND 2018. Nurses Day was first proposed by the Dorothy Sutherland in the year 1953 and first proclaimed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. It was first celebrated by ICN in the year 1965.

2) SpaceX Launches Most Powerful Falcon 9 Rocket
•The California-based aerospace company, SpaceX has blasted off its most powerful Falcon 9 rocket, which is certified to carry humans to space later this year.

•The Block 5 Falcon 9 rocket’s main goal for its maiden mission is to propel the first high-orbit communications satellite for Bangladesh, called Bangabandhu Satellite-1. The Block 5 Falcon 9 is eventually meant to carry astronauts to the International Space Station, with the first launch tentatively planned for December 2018.

3) Venkaiah Naidu 3-Nation Visit: India & Peru Signs Agreement
•India and Peru signed an agreement in the field of Renewable Energy at Lima. The pact was signed in the presence of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and the Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva Arevalo. This is the final leg of the 3-Nation visit to central America of Indian Vice- President.

•During the meeting, the leaders discussed various bilateral and international issues of mutual interest. Vice President’s visit comes at a time when India is celebrating the 55th anniversary of the establishment of Diplomatic Relations with Peru.

4) India Pavilion Inaugurated At Cannes Film Festival 2018
•The inaugural session of the Indian Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival 2018 was held at Cannes, France. It was hosted by noted actor Sharad Kelkar.

•A meeting between the Indian delegation and Ms. Isabelle Giordano, Director General, Unifrance, M. Loic Wong, Director of International Department, CNC, France was held to explore co-production opportunities between India and France.

5) Customs And Postal Department Hold 1st Ever Joint Conference
•Indian Customs and Department of India Posts held a first-ever Joint Conference in Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi to deliberate on streamlining of imports and exports by post.

•Imports and exports by post are the 6th highest cited citizen grievances under Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMs). Customs and Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) have worked together since a year to liberalise, reform and align laws relating to imports by Post.

6) Prof Muhammad Yunus Conferred KISS Humanitarian Award 2018
•Nobel laureate and noted economist Muhammad Yunus was honoured with the 11th KISS Humanitarian Award 2018 at a function held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. 

•Yunus is the founder of Grameen Bank and is known as the Father of Microfinance.
