1) Russia Unveils World's 1st Floating Nuclear Power Station
•Russia unveiled the world's first floating nuclear power station at a ceremony in the port of the far northern city of Murmansk, where it will be loaded with nuclear fuel before heading to eastern Siberia. Built in Saint Petersburg, the Akademik Lomonosov arrived in Murmansk where it was moored in the port and presented to the media. 

•Constructed by the state nuclear power firm Rosatom, the 144 by 30 metre (472 by 98 foot) ship holds two reactors with two 35 megawatt nuclear reactors that are similar to those used to power icebreaker ships. 

2) Japanese Director Wins Cannes' Top Award
•Asian, Arab, and women filmmakers scored big at the closing ceremony of the 71st Cannes Film Festival, while Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda took home the top prize -- the Palme d'Or. Kore-eda, in the festival's main competition for the fifth time, won the Palme d'Or for 'Manbiki Kazoku' (Shoplifters).

•Kore-eda is only the second Asian Palme d'Or winner this millennium (after Thailand's Apichatpong Weerasethakul for 'Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives', 2010). This is the seventh time that a director from Asia has bagged the coveted trophy. 

•Other Awards:

1.The Best Director prize went to Poland's Pawel Pawlikowski for the wonderfully well-crafted black-and-white 'Cold War'.
2.The Franco-Indian co-production 'Sir', directed by debutante Rohena Gera, had won the Gan Foundation Award for Distribution. 
3.The section's top prize, the Grand Prix, went to the Brazilian comedy-drama Diamantino.
4.Iranian auteur Jafar Panahi (along with co-screenwriter Nader Saeivar) figured on the Cannes 2018 winners list with Se Rokh (3 Faces), which shared the Best Screenplay prize with Italian director Alice Rohrwacher's Lazzaro Felice (Happy as Lazzaro). Lazzaro, one of three women directors in the fray, joined Labaki among this year's winners.
5.The acting honours went to Italian Marcello Fonte.
6.Jury president Cate Blanchett announced a Special Palme d'Or to 88-year-old Jean-Luc Godard's 'The Image Book'. 

3) India 6th Wealthiest Country With Total Wealth Of 8,230 Billion USD
•India is the sixth wealthiest country in the world with a total wealth of 8,230 billion US dollars. According to the AfrAsia Bank Global Wealth Migration Review, the US is the wealthiest country in the world with a total wealth of 62,584 billion dollars. China stood at the second place with 24,803 billion dollars, while Japan is at the third place with 19,522 billion dollars.

•Total wealth refers to the private wealth held by all the individuals living in each country. It includes all their assets less any liabilities. Government funds are excluded from it. Globally, the total private wealth held worldwide amounts to around 215 trillion US Dollars.

4) South Korea Wins Asian Champions Trophy 2018
•The Indian women’s Hockey team failed to defend its crown at the fifth Asian Champions Trophy, as it lost to hosts South Korea, 0-1 in the summit clash at Donghae City, South Korea. A goal by Youngsil Lee clinched the Korean team as the winner of Champions Trophy.

•The final was India’s first defeat of the tournament. South Korea has lifted the title for the third time after having won it in 2010 and 2011. India, on the other hand, finished second best for the second time after having lost to Japan in the final of the 2013 edition. Indian striker Vandana Katariya was declared player of the tournament while youngster Lalremsiami was named as the upcoming player of the tournament.

1) Karnataka CM Yeddyurappa Resigns
•BS Yeddyurappa resigned 55 hours after taking oath as the Karnataka CM, ahead of the floor test. BJP, with 104 seats, was seven short of the required number of 111.

•The Congress with 78 MLAs, the JD(S) with 36 and three others were also individually not in a position to form the government. But with BJP now exiting the picture, the Congress-JD(S) combine has 114 seats, more than the required number.

2) PM Modi Laid Foundation Stone Of India’s Longest Road Tunnel In J&K
•Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a day-long visit to Jammu and Kashmir. During his visit, Prime Minister laid down the foundation stone of 'Zojila Tunnel' on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway in Leh. The 14.2-kilometre long Zojila tunnel will be India’s longest road tunnel and Asia’s longest bidirectional tunnel.

•It will provide all-weather connectivity to the whole Ladakh region and Kargil in particular which remains cut off from rest of the world for more than 5 months of the winter. Prime Minister Modi also dedicated to the nation a 330 MW Kishenganga hydroelectric project from Srinagar. There are 7 functional NHPC power projects in J&K. The project has been built at a cost of Rs 5200 cr.

3) Dr Harsh Vardhan’s ‘Green Good Deeds’ Gets Global Recognition
•Green Good Deeds, the societal movement launched by Environment, Forest & Climate Change Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan to protect the environment and promote good living has found acceptance by the global community.

•Dr Harsh Vardan at the ongoing 4th BRICS Environment Ministerial in Durban, South Africa had urged the BRICS nations to jointly help in the development of a social movement to fight for the protection and conservation of the environment. The BRICS Ministerial on Environment has agreed to include “Green Good Deeds” in its official agenda in the next Ministerial in Brazil and another meeting in Russia.

4) NITI Aayog’s 3-Day Venture Capital Symposium 2018 Begins
•NITI Aayog, in association with Vision India Foundation, is organising the Venture Capital Symposium 2018to deepen the economic relationships between France and India. The Venture Capital Symposium 2018 is a three-day event where the French investors will be interacting with 100 early to mid-stage Indian start-ups.

•Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog, along with Atul Chaturvedi, Additional Secretary, DIPP addressed the inaugural address of the Symposium, which was attended by Alexandre Ziegler, Ambassador of France to India.

5) Gina Haspel Confirmed As 1st Female Director Of CIA
•The US Senate confirmed Gina Haspel as the first female director of Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Gina Haspel's confirmation in a 54-45 vote follows a partisan fight among senators about the CIA's Bush-era use of techniques such as waterboarding.

•The former CIA chief, Mike Pompeo, left to become US Secretary of State. 

6) Netherlands PM Mark Rutte To Be On 2-Day Official Visit To India
•Prime Minister of The Netherlands, Mark Rutte, will be on a two-day official visit to India with an aim to boost the economic and political cooperation between the two countries. Mr Rutte will be accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising of the Deputy Prime Minister and many other Ministers.

•During the visit, the India-Dutch CEOs forum will take place in New Delhi. India and The Netherlands have a bilateral trade of 5.39 billion dollars. The Netherlands is the 5th largest investor in India.

7) Indian Economy Projected To Grow 7.6% In 2018-19: UN Report
•India's economy is projected to grow 7.6% in fiscal year 2018-19, remaining the fastest growing economy in the world, according to a United Nations report. The UN World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP)as of mid-2018 launched recently stated that GDP growth in India is expected to climb to 7.5 and 7.6% in fiscal years 2017-18 and 2018-19 respectively.

•This is a substantial recovery from the 6.7 per cent growth India registered in fiscal year 2017. Amid ongoing structural reforms, growth in the Chinese economy is projected to gradually moderate from 6.9% in 2017 to 6.5% in 2018 and 6.3% in 2019. World economic growth is now forecast to reach 3.2% both in 2018 and 2019, an upward revision by 0.2 and 0.1 percentage points, respectively.

8) NMDC Bags S&P PLATTS Global Metals Award 2018
•NMDC (National Mineral Development Corporation) Limited has bagged the prestigious S&P Global PLATTS Global Metals Award 2018 in corporate social responsibility (CSR) category held at London.

•This is the first time since inception of this award that an Indian Company bagged an award in this category. The S&P Global Platts Global Metals Award recognizes top performers – industry leaders and innovators.

1) Suresh Prabhu Launched Intellectual Property Mascot ‘IP Nani’
•Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu has launched the Intellectual Property (IP) mascot ‘IP Nani’. The mascot was launched during a conference on the National Intellectual Property Rights Policy in New Delhi. 

•On the same occasion, an anti-piracy video featuring the Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan was also launched. The first and foremost objective of the Policy is “IPR Awareness: Outreach and Promotion”, aimed at raising awareness on IPR for school children to nurture creativity and the ability to innovate from a very young age.

2) Union Environment Ministry Launches Green Skill Development Programme
•The Union Environment Ministry launched the Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP) with an aim to train over 5.5 lakh workers in environment and forest sectors in the country.

•Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan also launched a related mobile app ‘GSDP-ENVIS’ to boost employability and entrepreneurship of the youth in the country. The app can be used for information and for applying to the courses. The GSPD-ENVIS app can be downloaded on android mobile phones without any hassle.

3) Smart Cities Mission- 1,333 Projects Worth Rs.50,626 Crores Completed Or Under Implementation
•The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has been able to achieve substantial milestones in both physical and financial terms in so far as mission objectives/targets are concerned. Thus, during the year 2017-18, while the total cumulative grants released was Rs.46,663 crores, Utilization Certificates were due only for the grants released upto March 2016, i.e. for approximately Rs.10,365 crores.

•Smart City Mission has lots of convergence with other missions like AMRUT etc. and some of the projects are implemented under Public Private Partnerships. 1,333 projects worth Rs. 50,626 crores have been completed or under implementation / tendering. Overall projects worth Rs.2,03,979 crores have been identified for all 99 smart cities across the country. The timeline for the completion of smart city projects according to the rounds in which they were selected is given below:

1. Round 1 cities- 2019-20 to 2020-21
2. Round 2 cities- 2019-20 to 2021-22
3. Round 3 cities- 2020-21 to 2021-22
4. Round 4 cities- 2020-21 to 2022-23

AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation):

•Under AMRUT, out of State Annual Action Plan(SAAP) size of Rs.77,640 crores, projects worth Rs.65,075 crores (84%) are under various stages of implementation including projects tendered and where DPRs have been approved. More than 22 crores urban population will benefit from this mission. Total of Rs. 11,945 crores has been released so far.

PMAY(U) (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban):

•Total of Rs. 24,475crores has been released to the States under the scheme. So far, 45.86 lakh houses have been sanctioned under the scheme; out of these 23.43 lakh houses have been grounded and 7.02 lakh houses have been completed so far (including incomplete houses of earlier scheme).

DAY - NULM (Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission):

•Under the Mission, Rs.1907.5 crores have been released so far. The Mission has been extended to all the statutory towns. Since the beginning of the mission, employment has been generated for 6,36,956 beneficiaries.

HRIDAY (Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana):

•City HRIDAY Plans (CHPs) for 12 cities have been approved. 66 DPRs amounting to Rs. 421.47 crores have been approved and Rs. 261.31 crores have been released to 12 cities for implementation of the scheme. Total expenditure under the scheme so far is Rs.209.5 crores. 58 projects are under implementation at various stages. All works will be completed by September 2018.

Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban):

•A total of Rs.6,592 crores have been released to states. Total number of 48.67 lakh individual household toilets and 3.3 lakh Community/Public Toilet (CT/PT) seats have already been constructed and 8.3 lakh individual toilets and 0.37 lakh CT/PT are under construction. 2679 cities have been so far self-declared Open Defecation Free and after third-party certification, 2,133 cities/ ULBs have been certified as Open Defecation Free (ODF).

4) SCO Cultural Ministers’ Meeting Held In Sanya, China
•The Minister of State for Culture, Dr Mahesh Sharma led the Indian delegation to the 15th Meeting of the Cultural Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization(SCO) Member States held in Sanya, China.India participated for the first time at the Meeting of  Cultural Ministers of the SCO.

•India became a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in June 2017 during the SCO Heads of State Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan.

5) Guatemala Becomes Second Country To Open Jerusalem Embassy
•Guatemala has opened an embassy in Jerusalem two days after the U.S. moved its embassy to the contested capital city.

•Israeli troops opened fire on Palestinian protesters after President Trump’s pledge to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem was fulfilled, taking tensions between Israel and Palestine to boiling point. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended the Guatemalan embassy’s opening in West Jerusalem.

6) Sridevi Honoured At Cannes Film Festival
•Veteran Bollywood actor Sridevi was honoured with the TITAN Reginald F Lewis Film Icon Award at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival.

•The award traditionally celebrates women of the film industry all over the world and also salute the multi-cultural impact on the world of cinema. Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai and producer Namrata Goyal received the award on behalf of Sridevi's family. 

7) BSE Becomes 1st Indian Stock Exchange To Get US SEC’s DOSM Recognition
•BSE Ltd became first Indian exchange to be designated as Designated Offshore Securities Market (DOSM) by United States Securities and Exchange Commission (US-SEC).

•DOSM status will allow the sale of securities to US investors through the trading venue of BSE without registration of such securities with US SEC. This will ease trades by US investors in India and also enhance the attractiveness of Indian Depository Receipts (IDRs) amongst US investors.

8) 1st Para-National Games To Be Held Under Khelo India Scheme
•The inaugural National Para Games, on the lines of National Games for able-bodied athletes, will be held under the Khelo India Scheme in June-July 2018 in Bengaluru. 

•The Games will be held for the age group of 16 to 40 (men and women) in 10 disciplines viz. para athletics, badminton, chess, blind judo, para powerlifting, shooting para-sport, para-swimming, table tennis, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing.
