CSE 2019: IRS Pratibha Verma (AIR 3) Tops Among the Selected Women Candidates

UPSC Civil Services 2019 topper Pratibha Verma (AIR 3) is currently serving as Income Tax Commissioner at Nagpur district of Maharashtra. She is also the woman topper among the 197 women selected for the civil services this year.

UPSC has declared the final results of the Civil Services 2019 exam and UP’s Pratibha Verma has topped among the women candidates with an AIR 3. A scholar since school days, Pratibha made her parents proud in whichever field she chose to excel in. Pratibha secured the AIR 3 in her third attempt.

A Scholar Throughout Her Career

Pratibha hails from the Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. Her father Mr. Suvansh Verma is a retired Principal and mother Usha Verma is a primary school teacher. Pratibha In the year 2008, she secured the third rank in UP in the high school examination. After her success, she did not look back again. She topped the district in the Inter examination from the city's KNIC School. After 12th, Pratibha cracked the IIT-JEE entrance test and got admitted to ent to IIT Delhi for a B.Tech degree.

Quit a Decent Corporate Job for UPSC Preparation

After completing her B.Tech. degree Pratibha got placed in Vodafone India. However, she resigned from the job to pursue her dream of becoming an IAS officer. In an interview, Pratibha says “I’ve been inspired by several civil services officers and being a part of the NSS in school motivated me even further. In the NSS, I had the chance to work closely with several NGOs that worked towards women empowerment and I knew this was an area I wanted to work with in the future as well,”

Secured an AIR 489 in UPSC 2018 Civil Services Exam

After quitting her job Pratibha began her preparation for the Civil services exam. In an interview, her mother says that her daughter studied for 16-18 hours every day for the UPSC exam preparation. She appeared for the exam in 2017 but could not qualify for the exam. In 2018, she took note of her mistakes in the previous attempt and wrote the UPSC exam with better preparation. This time her hard work paid off and she secured the 489 rank. She joined the services as an Income Tax Commissioner at Nagpur district.

UPSC Civil Services 2019 Exam Topper Among Women Candidates

Pratibha wanted to work for the welfare and upliftment of needy and poor people. This dream could only be fulfilled by becoming an IAS officer. To make her dream a reality, Pratibha took study leave from her IRS service and prepared for the UPSC Civil Services Exam 2019 in hope of a better rank and induction into the administrative services. Her hard work paid off and she secured the AIR 3 in the UPSC Civil Services 2019 Exam. She is also the topper among the women candidates.

Pakistan’s New Map

Why in news?

Pakistan’s new map asserts its claims on Jammu and Kashmir, Siachen and Sir Creek, and lays a new claim to Junagadh.

What are Pakistan’s claims?

Jammu and Kashmir – Pakistan map has claimed to all of Jammu and Kashmir, but not Ladakh.
This claim goes against its own commitment to adjudicate the future of all six parts of the erstwhile royal state of Jammu-Kashmir with India.

The new map draws a line demarcating Gilgit-Baltistan separately from the Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
It renamed Jammu and Kashmir as Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Siachen and Sir Creek - Both the places were under several discussions between India and Pakistan.
Pakistan’s unilateral claim over them is not helpful or conducive to future resolution.
Junagadh - The map has made a new claim over Junagadh, which opens up a completely new dispute.
Junagadh, a former princely state, was in contention at the time of Partition.
The issue was successfully resolved after a referendum was conducted there in February 1948.
In this referendum, an overwhelming 95% of the state’s residents voted to stay with India.
Junagadh’s accession to India was accepted by Pakistan.

Ladakh - The new map leaves the claim line with Ladakh unclear.

How did India respond?

Pakistan’s map appears to have reset several agreements with India that have been concretised over the past 70 years.
The Ministry of External Affairs has termed Pakistan’s announcement of a new map as an exercise in political absurdity.
It accused Pakistan of attempting a form of territorial aggrandisement supported by cross-border terrorism.

What is next?

India should be prepared for Pakistan taking all the issues it has raised with its new map to the international stage.
Pakistan’s actions come in conjunction with map-related issues India faces today on two other fronts with,
1. China at the Line of Actual Control on Ladakh, and
2. Nepal at Kalapani and Limpiyadhura (which Nepal’s government has also issued a new map about).
All these three countries objected to the map that India had issued in November 2019, albeit for different reasons.
India must be well-prepared to deal with the three-pronged cartographic challenge it will face in the coming months.

1) Nation observes 78th anniversary of Quit India movement

•The 78th anniversary of the August Kranti Din or Quit India Movement, which is considered as one of the important milestones in the history of freedom struggle of our country, is being observed on 8 August 2020. On 8 Aug 1942, Mahatma Gandhi gave a clarion call to end the British rule and launched the Quit India Movement at the session of the All-India Congress Committee in Mumbai.

•After the failure of Cripps Mission, Gandhiji gave the call to “Do or Die” in his Quit India speech delivered at the Gowalia Tank Maidan in Mumbai. The grateful country is paying homage to the freedom fighters and remembering the supreme sacrifices of the martyrs during the freedom struggle.

2) India to participate in Kavkaz 2020 exercise in Russia

•India will take part in the multilateral military “Russian Kavkaz 2020” strategic command-post exercise to be held in Astrakhan, Russia. The Indian contingent includes 150 Army personnel and a smaller number of personnel from the Navy and Air Force.

•The invitation for participation to Kavkaz 2020, also referred to as Caucasus-2020, has been extended to at least 18 countries including China, Iran, Pakistan and Turkey apart from other Central Asian Republics part of the SCO.

3) Maharashtra ties up with Google to start virtual classes

•Maharashtra government has tied up with Google to provide online education to students in the state. Maharashtra is the first state in the country that is launching such a project. The project was launched by the chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and will cover over 1.09 lakh government, private, aided, and unaided schools, and benefit over 22.03 million students. Students and teachers will get access to Google Classroom and G Suite for Education that will provide solutions to support remote learning.

4) Delhi Govt launches new “Electric Vehicle Policy”

•Delhi government has launched the “Electric Vehicle Policy” for the national capital under which will waive registration fee, road tax, and provide an incentive of up to ₹1.5 lakh for new cars. The government aims to generate employment to give a boost to Delhi’s economy and reduce pollution levels in the national capital.

•There is already the Centre’s scheme on electric vehicles called ‘Fame India Phase-2’, under which the Union government also provides some incentives. Delhi government scheme will be an addition to the Centre’s scheme and people can also avail benefits under both the schemes.

5) P S Ranipse becomes new IG of CRPF

•Odisha cadre IPS officer, P S Ranipse has been appointed as Inspector General (IG), in Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). He will hold the post on Central deputation for a period of five years from the date of joining.

•IPS officer P S Ranipse belongs to the 1995 batch and was serving as Additional Director General (Vigilance) in Odisha. He held the position of Inspector General of Police (Odisha) in 2013.

6) A book titled ‘Amazing Ayodhya’ authored by Neena Rai

•The book titled ‘Amazing Ayodhya’ has been authored by Neena Rai. The book offers “authentic information” about the city, which will not only help understand the life and times of ancient Hindus but also the revered figures of Rama and Sita. The book is publishing by house Bloomsbury.

•The author compares Ayodhya with the cultures of other ancient civilisations so that the reader feels connected to the past and the content of the book appears contemporary. The book will release in November this year.

7) India to host ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021

•The International Cricket Council has confirmed that the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 that was postponed due to Covid-19 will be held in Australia in 2022. India will host the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 as planned. ICC has also decided to postpone the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2021 in New Zealand till February-March 2022 because of the impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had on cricket globally.
