IRS (Indian Revenue Service) Exam:


An exam conducted by UPSC every year for recruitment process to control the revenue department of India is known as the Indian Revenue Service Exam. If one is interested in joining public services and wants to serve his country in financial matters then he can join IRS. People might want to know how to become income tax officer, so here is the answer.

Falling under the Department of Revenue in the Union Ministry of Finance,the Indian Revenue Service serves as an important fulcrum of the central civil services. Their services basically deal with collection of taxes and handing over the revenue to the government.


There are two branches of IRS exam:

Income tax

Customs and Central Excise

The work culture and work profile

The candidates who are selected in the examination of IRS would be working in the Income tax and customs departments. They also might be deputed to other agencies or departments within the finance ministry.

Advising on tax policies, framing or amending rules and regulations related to taxes are some of the tasks that fall under the work of IRS.

IRS professionals help in facilitating treatises and work as representatives of the Indian government in international forums, for instance OECD.

Directorate of Criminal Investigation which is under the Central Board of Direct Taxes prosecutes tax evaders after getting specific inputs and intelligence from their inside personnel.

Eligibility Criteria


Nationality of the candidate:

Below given are the eligibility criteria for the candidates who want to apply for Indian Revenue Service:

The candidate must be an Indian citizen

The candidate can also be a person of India who has migrated from countries like Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zaire, Vietnam or Ethiopia who want to or intend to permanently settle in India.

Educational Qualification of the candidate:

Candidate should have any of the following or any other equivalent degree:

The candidate can have agraduation degree from a Central, State or Deemed University

The candidate can have a graduation degree received through Correspondence Education or Distance education.

The candidate can have agraduation degree from an Open University
The candidate can have a qualification recognized by the Government of India as being equivalent to either of the above.

Other than these candidates,who have certificates from recognized authority should be able to present the certificate from their institute/university at the time of the main examination, if not provided then the students won’t be allowed to take the examination.

The candidates who have completed their MBBS examination but not yet got internship can also apply.

The candidates who have completed Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), ICSI and ICWAIA degree final examination from any private university can also apply.

The candidates with a degree only fromAssociation of Indian Universities (AIU) recognized foreign universities can also apply.

Age Limit:

Age limit is different for different castes. The minimum age is 21 years while the upper limit for:

General category is 32

OBC is 35 years

SC/ST is 37 years.

Also the candidates who are physically handicapped or backward in other factors are provided relaxation in upper age limit. 

Number of attempts:

For Unreserved Category: 6 

For Other Backward Classes Candidates: 9

For Schedule tribe/Schedule caste Candidates: No restriction

Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officers are safe guarders of the Economic conditions of the country. Mostly these officers are getting posted in intelligence agencies like the Research and Analysis Wing, Intelligence Bureau, Central Bureau of Investigation etc.

Duties of Income Tax and Customs Officials - IRS officers are mainly entrusted to identifying tax evasions. These officials are authorised to search and seize illegally occupiedand accumulated wealth and put the evadersbehind barsto prevent further evasions.

Indian Revenue Service officials are playing important roles in probing and exposing many corrupt practices in the country.

IRS officers are also entrusted to administer border postings to prevent smuggling activitiesso that the economic corridor of the country is well protected.
