UPSC CSE Syllabus & Resources: How to Prepare for General Studies Paper I

The UPSC CSE exam syllabus is vast and it’s a challenge to complete the entire syllabus. Therefore, we’re going to break it down and provide the syllabus in separate articles. The following article contains the syllabus of the General Studies Paper I of the UPSC CSE Prelims Exam and resources for preparation.  This article is brought to you by Oliveboard, an online exam preparation platform for government and banking jobs.

First, let’s have a look at the UPSC CSE Prelims Exam Pattern:

Aptitude Test (CSAT)

The Question papers will be set both in Hindi & English.The Prelims Exam comprises of two compulsory Objective Type papers of 200 marks each. The General Studies Paper II is qualifying in nature with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%. The above pattern is based on the 2017 exam.

1.     Current Events of National and International Importance

·         Newspapers: The Hindu/ The Indian Express
·         Magazines: Yojana/ Kurukshetra
·         pib.nic.in (Press Information Bureau releases)
·         Websites of different Ministries of India

2.     History of India and Indian National Movement
 
Resources:

·         All new NCERT books- Class 6th to 12th
·         History of Modern India: Bipin Chandra
·         Tamil Nadu NCERT- Class 11th and 12th
·         CCRT website for Art and Culture
·         An Introduction to Indian Art (Part-1)- Class 11th NCERT
·         Craft Tradition of India- Class 12th NCERT

3.     Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World
 
Resources:

·         All new NCERT books- Class 6th to 12th
·         Certificate Physical and Human Geography- G.C. Leong
·         Any good school Atlas

4.     Indian Polity and Governance Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Right Issues, etc.
 
Resources:

·         Indian Polity: M. Laxmikanth
·         NCERT Books: Class 11th and 12th for Political Science and Sociology

5.     Economic and Social Development – Sustainable development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
 
Resources:

·         NCERT Books: Class 11th and 12th
·         Budget and Economic Survey
·         India Year Book 2017 for Schemes launched by Government

6.      General Issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate change

Resources:

·         India Year Book 2017- Chapters on Environment
·         Topics in news in last one year related to environment such as conventions, treaties, organizations, IUCN Red list species etc.
·         NCERT- Biology Class 12th– Unit 9 and 10 (Biotechnology and Ecology Chapters)

7.     General Science
 
Resources:

·         NCERT books- Class 7th to 10th
·         Topics in news related to Science and Technology

PRE SYLLABUS UPSC Prelims Syllabus

ALL ABOUT PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION:

The Examination shall comprise of two Papers of 200 marks each.
  • General Studies – Paper I ) (Total 100 Question)
  • CSAT – Paper II (Total 80 Questions) [ Qualifying in Nature : You Need only 33 % Marks ]
General Studies Paper-1
  • Current events of national and international importance.
  • History of India and Indian
  • National Movement.
  • Indian and World Geography -Physical, Social, Economic, Geography of India and the World.
  • Indian Polity and Governance -Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
  • General issues on Environmental, Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialisation
  • General Science.
Paper-II (CSAT)
  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision-making and problem solving
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level),
  • Data interpretation (charts, graphs,tables, data sufficiency etc. -Class X level)
Note-1:
  • Both the question papers will be of the objective type (Multiple Choice Questions).
  • Time Allotment – Two Hours for each Paper.
  • The question papers will be set both in Hindi and English.

Note-2: Paper-II of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination will be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%. So focus should be on General Studies Paper-1.
